As passionate advocates of human rights, both Stewart and Pooja have vast experience with human rights cases including advocating for the reunification of families during the COVID-19 border closure, recognition of two mothers on a birth certificate, first same-sex de facto adoption, obtaining New Zealand citizenship for an individual wishing to retain their links to their whakapapa, and representing those fleeing persecution by way of refugee claims.

Stewart fought for and won the right for two women to be named on a child’s birth certificate as “mother” for children conceived using assisted reproductive techniques. Previously only one parent would be named as ‘mother’. The child’s birth certificate made history as it was the first of its type ever issued in New Zealand.

Stewart and his partner were the first same-sex de facto couple to be able to jointly adopt children in New Zealand. This landmark case has gone on and made adoption possible for various couples who previously thought otherwise.
